The 2025 Formula 1 season is entering its final stretch, with eight flyaway races remaining. The action resumes in Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, a circuit known for delivering unexpected drama and on-track chaos.
McLaren’s Constructors’ Championship Charge
All eyes have been on the intense battle between McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who are locked in a two-way fight for the Drivers’ Championship. Their dominance this season has propelled McLaren to a commanding lead in the Constructors' standings. With seven wins for Piastri and five for Norris, including seven 1-2 finishes, the team is now on the cusp of securing the title.
McLaren could clinch the championship this weekend in Baku, a record-breaking seven races early. To do so, they need a first and second or first and third-place finish, regardless of what second-placed Ferrari does. Alternatively, they just need to outscore the Scuderia by nine points and ensure they don’t lose 12 points to Mercedes or 33 points to Red Bull.
Verstappen and Red Bull’s Resurgence
In the midst of McLaren’s reign, Red Bull unexpectedly broke their six-race winning streak at Monza. After struggling at the Italian circuit last year, Max Verstappen delivered a stunning performance, winning his first race in nine starts and finishing over 19 seconds ahead of the two McLarens.
While Verstappen is too far back to challenge for the drivers’ title, his recent win could be a significant factor in the remaining races. Red Bull introduced a new floor at Monza, which, combined with a strong setup, appeared to give them a significant performance boost. Baku will be a crucial test to see if their improved pace was a one-off for Monza’s unique characteristics or a sign of a true comeback for the defending champions.
Antonelli's Response and Bearman's Risk
For rookie driver Kimi Antonelli, the return to flyaway races could offer a chance to reset after a challenging European leg. Despite strong support from his Mercedes team, he faced criticism from Team Principal Toto Wolff following an "underwhelming" weekend at Monza. Antonelli, who scored his only two points of the season in Hungary and Italy, previously mentioned putting too much pressure on himself at familiar European tracks. His last non-European race in Canada resulted in his first F1 podium, and a return to Baku—where he earned a podium in F2 last year—could be just the confidence boost he needs.
Meanwhile, Haas driver Ollie Bearman is walking a tightrope with ten penalty points on his license. After being handed a penalty at Monza for a collision with Carlos Sainz, he is just two points away from an automatic one-race ban. The situation is ironic, as a similar ban for his then-teammate Kevin Magnussen at Baku last year opened the door for Bearman to make his F1 debut. His penalty point count will remain a concern until after the Mexico City Grand Prix, putting him under pressure for the next four races. The penalty system itself has become a talking point among drivers, especially after Williams successfully appealed a penalty for Carlos Sainz, leading to its rescission.
