Formula 1 returns to Monza for Round 13 of the 2026 season with an unusual home favourite. Kimi Antonelli arrives in Italy at the top of the Drivers’ Championship, but a planned Mercedes power-unit change is set to push him down the starting grid.
That penalty gives Ferrari a major opportunity in front of the Tifosi, particularly after McLaren interrupted Mercedes’ early-season dominance by winning the final two races before Monza. Red Bull, meanwhile, must decide whether Isack Hadjar is fit to return or Liam Lawson should remain alongside Max Verstappen.
Kimi Antonelli faces a recovery race at home
Antonelli’s first Italian Grand Prix as a championship contender will begin with a significant handicap.
Mercedes plans to install a complete new power unit in his car, triggering a grid penalty that should leave the Italian starting near the back. Reliability problems earlier in the season convinced the team that neither Antonelli nor George Russell could safely reach the final round with their existing allocation.
The timing is deliberate. Mercedes believes Monza is the most suitable circuit on which to absorb the penalty, despite the commercial appeal of having Antonelli challenge for victory in front of his home crowd. Toto Wolff made the priority clear: protecting the wider championship campaign matters more than maximising one weekend.
Why Mercedes chose Monza for the penalty
Few circuits offer more realistic opportunities to recover from a poor starting position. Monza’s long straights, powerful slipstream effect and heavy braking zones create several conventional overtaking points. A fast car can make progress here without depending entirely on strategy or an unusual race interruption.
That does not make Antonelli’s task straightforward. Passing through the midfield costs time, while running in traffic can restrict strategic flexibility. The danger for Mercedes is not simply losing the victory. Antonelli could also surrender a meaningful share of his 59-point championship lead if the recovery stalls.
Yet the decision reflects Mercedes’ position of strength. Antonelli leads both Russell and Lewis Hamilton by 59 points in the 2026 F1 driver standings, giving the team room to accept short-term damage in exchange for greater reliability during the run-in.
Ferrari have their best opening for a Monza victory
Ferrari will rarely find a better chance to attack Mercedes on home soil.
Hamilton arrives level with Russell for second in the championship, while Charles Leclerc sits only four points behind Lando Norris in fifth. Ferrari are also Mercedes’ closest challengers in the Constructors’ Championship, although the gap remains a substantial 87 points.
Antonelli’s penalty removes one of the strongest cars from the immediate fight at the front. Ferrari must now make that opportunity count.
Hamilton and Leclerc have each won a Grand Prix in 2026, but McLaren’s victories in Hungary and the Netherlands have changed the competitive picture. Norris, in particular, carries genuine momentum into a circuit where straight-line efficiency and confidence under braking can quickly alter the order.
Ferrari therefore cannot treat Antonelli’s setback as a clear route to victory. Russell remains a threat in the second Mercedes, while McLaren’s recent form suggests the battle at Monza could involve at least three teams.
Qualifying will be crucial. Track position reduces exposure to the DRS trains that often form through the midfield, and Ferrari will want at least one car on the front row before turning its attention to race strategy.
For Hamilton, the weekend also presents a chance to strengthen his championship challenge. For Leclerc, it is an opportunity to deliver another of the emotionally charged Monza performances on which his relationship with the Tifosi has been built.
Red Bull must settle its driver line-up
The identity of Max Verstappen’s Monza teammate remains one of the weekend’s immediate questions.
Isack Hadjar missed the Dutch Grand Prix after injuring his wrist during the summer break. Red Bull moved Liam Lawson into Hadjar’s car at Zandvoort, with Yuki Tsunoda returning to Racing Bulls as part of the temporary reshuffle.
Lawson made a strong case for continuity. Despite limited preparation during a Sprint weekend, he qualified on the same row as Verstappen and finished seventh, behind only the McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari drivers. Tsunoda also produced a competitive weekend for Racing Bulls, narrowly missing the points.
Hadjar’s fitness will determine whether those combinations remain in place. If he is not cleared to return, Lawson should receive a second consecutive weekend with Red Bull and, this time, three practice sessions in which to adapt.
Monza would offer a very different examination. Zandvoort rewards front-end confidence and sustained cornering performance; the Italian circuit places far greater emphasis on braking stability, low-drag efficiency and energy management along its long straights.
Another convincing Lawson performance would inevitably carry weight beyond this race. Red Bull’s immediate decision is medical, but every substitute appearance also becomes an audition.
The 2027 F1 driver market is becoming clearer
Several contract announcements before and after Zandvoort have removed much of the uncertainty surrounding the 2027 Formula 1 grid.
Williams will retain Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, giving James Vowles continuity as the team’s long-term project develops. Franco Colapinto has secured another season with Alpine, while Lando Norris has committed his future to McLaren.
The most consequential agreement belongs to Verstappen. His new Red Bull contract runs until at least the end of 2030, closing off the possibility of a major move that could have triggered changes throughout the grid.
Which 2027 seats could still change hands?
Aston Martin remain a team to monitor because Fernando Alonso has not confirmed his 2027 plans. Haas also have decisions to make, even if Ollie Bearman is widely expected to continue. Esteban Ocon’s recent performances strengthen his case to remain alongside him.
Red Bull and Racing Bulls carry their own uncertainty. Hadjar and Arvid Lindblad appear well placed to stay within the organisation, but Lawson’s Zandvoort opportunity has returned him to the conversation. Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov adds another option to a programme that rarely allows its driver hierarchy to stand still for long.
Monza will not settle the entire market. It could, however, influence how Red Bull assesses the depth and order of its available drivers.
Ferrari celebrate Michael Schumacher’s Monza legacy
Ferrari’s home weekend will also carry a powerful historical theme.
The team is marking 30 years since Michael Schumacher joined the Scuderia and won at Monza during his first season in red. That 1996 victory was an early landmark in a partnership that eventually produced five consecutive Drivers’ Championships between 2000 and 2004.
Schumacher won the Italian Grand Prix five times for Ferrari. His final Monza victory came in 2006, on the same weekend that he announced his first retirement from Formula 1.
Ferrari initially revealed special race suits for Hamilton and Leclerc featuring Schumacher’s logo and the seven stars associated with his seven world titles. The team has since presented a one-off Schumacher-inspired livery for the Italian Grand Prix.
The tribute gives Ferrari an emotional centrepiece, but the strongest celebration would be delivered on Sunday. With Antonelli starting out of position and both Ferrari drivers already race winners this season, the Scuderia has a credible opportunity to fight beneath the Monza podium rather than simply admire it.
