F1 Tech Updates for Canadian GP 2024

Published on 2024-06-06

The Canadian Grand Prix offers a strategic break in the development race for Formula 1 teams. With a triple-header looming in Barcelona just two weeks away, many teams are opting to prioritize upgrades for the Spanish circuit. Here's a breakdown of the limited updates deployed for Montreal.

Selective Upgrades for Red Bull, Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Williams

Red Bull stands out with a new rear wing designed to generate more localized downforce, crucial for handling Canada's high-speed corners. Additionally, they introduce larger front brake duct exits to address the demanding braking zones on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Mercedes follows a similar approach, focusing on improved cooling with enlarged front brake duct inlets. They also introduce a realigned front suspension to optimize airflow towards the floor for a performance boost.

Aston Martin joins the upgrade party with a new beam wing, while Williams implements suspension updates on both axles. Their revised front suspension features a shorter steering arm for more precise driver input, while a new pullrod rear suspension design offers a wider range of ride height options and reduces weight for improved performance.

Strategic Rear Wing Adjustments for Downforce and Drag Management

Red Bull's new rear wing prioritizes efficient downforce generation, a key factor in maintaining grip on the long straights of the Canadian track. However, this necessitates a corresponding adjustment to the front wing to maintain car balance. A similar strategic approach is evident with Stake Sauber, who introduce updated rear and beam wings optimized for low-downforce setups. Likewise, Haas unveils an evolved front wing designed to work in conjunction with their lower-downforce rear wing configuration.

Three Teams Hold Back for Barcelona

Interestingly, Ferrari, McLaren, and Alpine choose to forego upgrades for the Canadian Grand Prix. This strategic decision suggests they are prioritizing development efforts for the upcoming triple-header in Barcelona, where significant upgrades are likely to be deployed.
